BRAND SURVEY STUFF!

If you saw my e-mail a couple of weeks ago I asked you to complete an on-line survey. This proved a very important point to me. You see I had asked the same thing in the last edition of BRAND NEWs and frankly the volume of responses did not exactly overwhelm me! I guess it comes down to most people generally thinking that someone else will do it. To be frank I was a little disappointed, but I did have enough responses to have a valid poll, I just would really have preferred a bigger number.

So I decided to send out an e-mail to you all, this time specifically asking for the order! I got 3 times the response! Why the difference?

To me it just reinforces the point that if you don't ask for the order you just won't get it. According to my friend and sales expert Jack Daly, most salespeople ask for the order up to 3 times. But Sales Superstars ask for the order up to 7 times and that's what makes the difference. So thanks for responding guys, I really didn't want to send another 5 e-mails, as an ex-pat Englishman I still struggle with that kind of extra communication.

The following are the results of just 3 of the questions, I will feature more answers in subsequent issues of BRAND NEWs. But if you want to see all of the results ahead of time, just send me an e-mail at info@jacksims.com and I will get them right out to you!

Survey Surprises!

1. What is the current condition of the industry you are competing in?

The results are very encouraging; a whopping 56% said that your industry is in a growth mode!

Which of course means some of you are NOT in a growth mode. So I thought it would be really interesting for you to read one of the notes that I received from an Improv Troupe who are not exactly busting out, and maybe collectively we could help them! So here's my thinking is; that there are a lot of smart people who read BRAND NEWs and just maybe if we take a couple of minutes we could give them some ideas that will help this Improve Troupe grow their business;  This is what they said;

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       We are a local Improv Troupe. Our shows are very similar to what you would see on "Who's Line is it Anyway" w/ Drew Carry and Wayne Brady. Most people assume we do stand-up comedy instead. We are the only performance group of our kind in the city. Very few know or understand what we do. Very hard to know how to market ourselves with a veeeerrrry limited budget.

If you would like to give your help on how they can increase their business and brand just click here and I will pass all of them along to the group and post what I think is the best idea in next month's BRAND NEWs

2. Does your company have a "Mission Statement?"

63% of you have Mission Statements, well done! The question is who cares? Yes who cares? Who is your Mission Statement written and created for and who does it actually affect and more importantly who can quote it? I have given hundreds of speeches around the country and probably have asked 60% of these audiences if they can quote their Mission Statement. Not one audience member has ever responded! They just don't work!

What DOES work is what I call my "Brand Commitment Statement", which describes exactly what your brand is committed to doing! What does it stand for and what can your employees do to help make that happen? I strongly suggest that you make your "Brand Commitment Statement" become a part of your hiring and training process. Every person in the company MUST be able to quote it, but more importantly, truly agree with it and help make it happen.

3. Does everyone in your organization know what your brand stands for and are they able to communicate it clearly to your customers?

Wow, this one really took my breath away, here are the numbers;

11.4 % said 10% know what the brand stands for!

2.9% said 20% know what the brand stands for!

11.4% said 30% know what the brand stands for!

11.4% said 50% know what the brand stands for!

14.3% said 60% know what the brand stands for!

11.4% said 70% know what the brand stands for!

17.1% said 80% know what the brand stands for!

20% said 90% know what the brand stands for!

As you can see the numbers are all over the shop and this just tells me it is a huge opportunity for a lot of you to help solidify your brand impression with your employees and your customers. Why not have a company meeting where you specifically address this issue? If your employees do not know what the brand stands for, why or how would you expect them to deliver the correct message to your customers?

Reader Comments

As you can imagine I do get e-mails from readers. Oftentimes they ask questions and I am very happy to answer them. Occasionally, I get

e-mails from people who just want to say thanks.

I have never done this before, but on this occasion I am making an exception. I hope you will understand why;

Message for Jack: Just a note of appreciation. I am a nobody. I work for a small company in a non-marketing capacity (currently), but have a fairly extensive marketing background with a high tech Fortune 500 headquartered in Palo Alto, CA. Somehow I got on your mailing list -- I'm not sure how -- and now I hunger for your newsletters and read and re-read them and print them and save them and love them. Whenever I can I toss your gems into the ocean of ignorance (not an insult) that surrounds me. Unfortunately you will never get a speaking engagement from me, but just know how grateful I am for your wit and wisdom. Enough gems and enough time and who knows, there could be a mountain in the middle of the ocean.

Thanks, Sharon

Wow, how would you like to have this reader as one of your employees?

They certainly are NOT A NOBODY! To me it's obvious that they are truly someone who really cares about the quality of what their company is creating and the culture and environment within it. If you read BRAND NEWs #4 you know that I talked about PEOPLE and the fact that Hiring is a Process not an Act. If you want to grow your business or your job position into a big brand, make sure that you are consistently looking for people like this reader; someone who really cares and wants to work to grow your brand into a brand leading company.

Thanks for the e-mail Sharon!

Willie the Cat

Well, here he is, the newest member of the Sims family -              Willie the Cat.              Isn't he the cutest????

But the story of how we got him is special. My wife Kathi (they are her hands holding him) was getting ready to go to work one morning and heard what she thought was a bird crying. Brushing it off, she went to work. She arrived home and the crying was still going on, so she investigated.  What she found was this one week old kitten with one of its paws stuck between two rocks on our beach. At this point there was no choice; we now are the proud parents of Willie (The name is based on the fact that he had the will to live).

The bad news is that I have been in New York working, so I have not actually had a face-to-face encounter with the kitten yet. But, I have had to listen to him purring on the phone at night.

All of a sudden, it's like being a new parent all over again, and I can honestly say that it has made my wife's face just light up, and that is really important to me.

Charlotte

I had a great speaking session in Charlotte for The Associated Locksmiths of America.

What a great bunch of people!!!!

What made my experience so great was that I am a huge fan of escapologists, people who can escape from locks and chains etc. I have been since I was a kid growing up in England.

In fact, I have a 5ft x 4 ft poster of Harry Houdini in chains in our NY house; it holds the place of honor on the wall as you go up the stairs. I have probably read every book written on Harry Houdini and he still continues to amaze me all of theses years after his death (Halloween by the way).

Anyway, after the event the folks of ALOA gave me a really special gift, which I will treasure. It is a set of my very own lock picks, is that cool or what?

Another part of this session was extra special; I mentioned on stage that I was a big fan of escapology, so many of them came up afterwards to tell me some of the incredible things that they had experienced when they were called out to help people who were locked in or out of things. These guys had some amazing stories and if they wrote a book I would be first on line to buy a copy!

Summer Time in New York

As you know I have been in New York for the summer Teaching Golf at the New Windsor Golf Course between speaking engagements. However my wife has been at home and it has given me the chance   to reflect somewhat!               I was thinking the other night of one of the greatest lines that the late great John Lennon wrote; "You don't know what you've got till you lose it".

I have been away from my wife and our new cat on and off for about 3 months and that's not a good thing for me or my wife!          But on the other hand, I have been able to spend a great deal of time doing something that I have been looking forward to and that is teaching golf.   I also have managed to spend some special moments with my two children, (although they are adults they are still my kids) who both have lived in the New York area for many years. I know that I am incredibly lucky because I do have the choice, but sometimes just having the choice makes it even more difficult. The net result is that the saying is true; absence makes the heart grow fonder!
